Data Protection and GDPR – Registering with the ICO

There is one common pitfall that businesses in the UK face, because a lot of people don’t actually know this exists!

Today I’m talking all about registering with the ICO. Did you know that this was a thing?

Registration

The ICO is the Information Commissioner's, a UK public body focusing on data protection and data privacy. Thanks to our good friend data protection, registering with the ICO is actually one of the most important things that you need to do from a compliance perspective.

If your business (or the business you work for) processes personal data in any way, shape or form you need to register.

Pretty much all businesses in the UK process personal data, including those of you in the construction industry.

Processes personal data includes taking names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses etc. from individuals - something you most likely do on the daily.

Registering with the ICO takes literally minutes and will usually cost between £40 and £60, depending on your company size. If you don’t, the penalty is up to £4,000 (plus your registration fee).

You need to pay this annually but you will get a reminder from the ICO in case you forget.

You can register here - https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/

Now there are some businesses exempt from registration, so fill in the self assessment form which you can find in the above link, or get in touch for more information.

To conclude

This small registration can be a pretty big hurdle for businesses, purely because it's a lesser known (yet important) thing.

You don't want to end up with a hefty find through your door, so register today!
